Rolley Polley

Short story:

Choose one word. Rolley Polley

I am sitting in the grass next to the big oak tree in my yard. The grass is green, the sun is hot, and the dirt is dry. I like being outside, especially next to my favorite oak tree. The tree is hollow in the middle, but some how still alive. The leaves are all bursting in green vibrant colors. In the middle of the trunk is a hole. Like the holes owls live in. I love this tree, just above the grass at the bottom of the tree a snake lives. I see it whenever I come close. I have been begging my dad for a tree fort, right above the hollowing, but mom never says yet without a fight. So I sit close to the big oak tree and look at what it has to bring to nature. But my favorite creature living in the tree would be the rolley polleys. They are grey insects that can roll up into balls. I pick one up into my hand, and it rolls into a ball. Once it gets comfortable enough, it crawls all around me. They don't bite, or sting, they are completely harmless. I love watching them, and looking for them as they crawl up the big trunk of the oak tree.

Reading and dialogue

I went to the Toscano reading, it was PACKED. I got there right on time, but by the looks of it I should've gotten there a half hour early! So I stood on the sidewalk in the doorway trying to listen as well as I could.

The readings sounded a lot like the readings we heard in class. Very modern and contemporary pieces. To me it kind of seems like the characters are just blurting out whatever comes to mind, and whatever flows with the rhythm of the "conversations". All in all I thought the reading was very interesting, and definitely one of a kind.

Dialogue:

Sally and Sarah are twin sisters. Sally is more girly than Sarah, she likes to play with barbies, listen to girly music, paint her nails, and do her hair. She likes to go outside, but she doesn't always have to be with her sister or a friend, she enjoys playing with herself, but also enjoys company. Sarah is a tom boy, she loves sports and is very good at them, she wouldn't dare put on a dress, he hair is always tied back, sometimes in pigtails. She relies on her sister a lot, and doesn't like to play alone, so she gets upset when Sally wants to play with barbies.

A place:

Their neighbor mike's house. A small farm house, he has 8 dogs, and about four horses, which roam on a small pasture about 4 acres. In the back of the pasture there is a small watering whole.

A situation:

Sarah and Sally are sitting at home, they see their neighbor pulling into the driveway. Sarah wants to go over to Mike's house, but Sarah is content playing inside. Sarah finally talks sally into going over to mike's house. They run across the street onto the hot black top driveway and greet Mike there. He put them to work feeding the dogs, gathering the horses to feed them too, watering all the animals, and if they are lucky they get too feed the animals treats. The barn smells like hay and it is warm outside. Sally is wearing pink sandals, with pink and purple shorts, and a pink blouse to match. Sarah is wearing a a black t-shirt, grey and yellow shorts, and sneakers.

Dialogue:

X=Sarah

x: I'm bored
-: Me too.
x: Let's go outside
-: Nah, I'm gonna stay in and watch TV and brush my dolls hair.
x: C'mon Sall! Look! Mike's home! Lets go over there!
-: Well. let me get dressed!
x: What the heck Sall! You always wear your good sandals and good clothes over there, and you know it's just going to get dirty!
-: Sarah! These pink sandals are from last summer! And you know i HATE sneakers!
x: Well you should start wearing them! I'm able to do so much more!
-: Sarah, I like petting the dogs and brushing the horses, not running around with them!
x: Whatever, lets go!
-: Hey! Don't run so fast! I'm in sandals!
x: See what I mean!
-: Shut up!
